The M1910 meat can pouch was designed to carry the “meat can”, or mess kit, as well as the soldier’s knife, fork and spoon. The pouch had buckles on the back where straps were fed through and thereby attached to the outside of the soldier’s haversack. Examples issued to the United States Marine Corps were stenciled with the Marine’s first initial and last name, and surviving examples are scarce.
The example featured here is the second pattern here is the second pattern pouch, which utilized 4 attachment buckles on the back (which replaced the previous pattern utilizing grommets). What is nice about this example is that we know that it was issued to a member of the United States Marines because it bears the classic name stenciling that was unique to the USMC. This one is a bit difficult to read, and is quite faded, but it looks like “J.A. Immele”. A cursory search didn’t turn up anything, but we’ll leave a more thorough search to the new owner. As you can see, this one is missing the closure button for the flap, which could be replaced if you so wish. Nonetheless, a scarce pouch.
The pouch remains in fair-good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. General fading and period soiling is evident. Slight odor from storage. As mentioned, it is missing the closure button. The stenciling is light.
